LISTEN TO THE ROY JEMSON INTERVIEW
Roy Jemson (Sandown Bowls)
In the vibrant world of Island sports, Roy Jemson is a cornerstone of the bowling community, particularly within the Sandown Bowls & Sports Club, where he is known for his leadership as much as his precision on the green. Much like the other stalwarts of the Bay area, Roy is a “dual-threat”—a highly competitive player who also dedicates his time to the governance and survival of his club.
Roy is far more than just a member; he is a vital part of the club’s administration. Roy has served as a Director of the Sandown Bowls & Sports Club (1926) Ltd for many years. His role involves the complex “behind-the-scenes” management that ensures the historic club—located at the beautiful Sandham Gardens—remains a thriving hub for the community. Alongside other long-serving directors, Roy has been instrumental in navigating the club through modern challenges, ensuring that the facilities for both indoor and outdoor bowls remain top-tier for future generations.
Roy’s name is a regular fixture in the “Island Sport” columns of the IW Observer and Island Echo, often appearing in the results for high-stakes matches.. He is frequently cited as a key player in successful rinks. For instance, in significant matches against mainland opposition or other Island clubs, Roy has a reputation for delivering under pressure. In March 2024, Roy was a featured player in the prestigious President’s Challenge match, representing the “Islanders” side in a nail-biting 90–89 victory against a visiting Devon team. He is one of the dedicated few who bridge the gap between the seasons, competing in Outdoor Bowls during the summer months and shifting seamlessly to Indoor Bowls during the winter to keep his competitive edge sharp.
Roy is often at the center of the friendly but fierce rivalries that define Island bowling. He has famously represented Sandown in the annual quest for the Tom Blake Trophy, a unique competition where indoor specialists take on their outdoor counterparts. His consistency has earned him respect across the Island, often playing alongside other local legends like Jeff Edkins and Bob Mortlock in major knockout cups.
Living and playing in the Sandown area, Roy embodies the spirit of the “Bay” sports scene—where the social side of the club is just as important as the scoreline. Whether he is welcoming new members to the Avenue Road clubhouse or strategising for the next league match, he is a face that everyone in the local bowling circuit knows and respects.
