LISTEN TO THE PAT SMYTHE INTERVIEW
Pat Smythe (Sandown Bowls)
To round off this collection of Island legends, Pat Smythe is a vital force within the Sandown Bowls & Sports Club, recognized as one of the most consistent and versatile competitive bowlers currently active on the Isle of Wight. While the name “Pat Smythe” historically belongs to an Olympic showjumper, in the world of modern lawn bowls, this Pat is a local hero of the greens, known for a high-stakes “clutch” playing style and a trophy cabinet that is constantly expanding.
Pat is a regular name at the top of the leaderboards, known for his precision in both singles and team formats. He is a former winner of the Sandown Bowls Club Handicap Singles, a title that proves his ability to outmaneuver opponents regardless of the starting score. In 2025, Pat earned a spot in the prestigious national “Hot Shots Club” (featured in Bowls International) after his rink—consisting of Tony Churms, Bob Mortlock, and Dave King—achieved the rare feat of scoring a maximum count in a single end during a competitive match.
If there is one event that defines Pat’s local legacy, it is the annual Sandown Cup, a tournament that draws teams from across the Island to the Ryde Marina and Sandown greens. Pat has a remarkable record in this competition, featuring in the winning teams in both 2023 and 2024. His 2024 victory alongside Jeanette Powell, Bob Powell, Gary Soal, and Dave King showcased his ability to integrate into high-performing rinks, often acting as the steady hand that secures a narrow victory.
Pat’s talent is not confined to his home club at Sandham Gardens; he is a key representative for the Isle of Wight County teams. County Pairs Success: One of his standout career highlights was winning the Men’s County Pairs title alongside the well-known Islander Bob Mortlock. Winning at a county level is the benchmark of excellence in the sport, marking Pat as one of the top-tier players in the region. He is a frequent pick for the Sandown “A” team, competing in the top divisions of the Island leagues and often facing off against rivals from Shanklin, Ryde, and Bembridge.
Based at the historic Sandown Bowls & Sports Club (established in 1926), Pat is part of the generation that has kept the club thriving as a community interest company. Whether he’s finishing as a runner-up in the Men’s 100up (as he did in 2025) or leading a team to a league promotion, Pat is known for his sportsmanship and his deep involvement in the club’s social and competitive calendar.
